5 Tips For Winterizing Your Home
5 Tips for Winterizing Your Home
January has arrived, so now’s the perfect time to winterize your home – if you haven’t done so already! The Realty Edge Team has put together a short list to help you stay safe, keep warm and save money this winter. Read on for helpful winterizing tips and suggestions:
1. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Its very important to put together an emergency kit should there be a power outage from a blizzard or severe weather. Your kit should include matches and candles, flashlights, blankets, a first-aid kit, non-perishable food items, pet food (if you have a furry friend) and bottled water. Store your kit in a dry, easy-to-reach place that's convenient and practical for your family.
2. Insulate Your Windows
Stop by your favorite home improvement store such as Home Depot or Menards and buy a window installation film kit. Did you know? Insulating your windows can keep up to 70% of your heat inside your home!
3. Seal Your Windows with Weather-strip Tape
Add weather-stripping tape on your windows and doors to help keep them sealed tight and to help prevent drafts and cold air from coming in.
4. Buy Draft Guards
Like weather-stripping tape, draft guards are a great solution when you want to keep out the cold. Draft guards can be placed under your front door or patio door to help prevent heat from escaping your home. You could also use a rolled-up blanket or towel, but draft guards are usually reasonably priced and more discreet.
5. Update Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Double-check all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure that they are working properly. Swap out dead batteries with new ones or replace detectors if needed to help keep your family safe. Be sure a smoke detector is in every bedroom, if not every room of your home, and that a carbon monoxide detector is near both your water heater and furnace.
