Feed The Birds Day
Tomorrow is Feed the Birds Day!
Feed the Birds Day falls on February 3rd each year, and the whole month of February is Bird-Feeding Month. Bird-Feeding Month began not too long ago in 1994 by John Porter. He read a resolution to the Speaker of the House into the Congressional record: “I would like to recognize February, one of the most difficult months in the United States for wild birds, as National Bird-Feeding Month.”
This time of the year, small birds often run low on resources, and large birds aren’t always able to get food they need if they arrive too early in the season. February can be a tricky month for birds. The weather is unpredictable. It's usually the coldest and snowiest month. And it's also when food is the most scarce or hidden in the snow.
So tomorrow (and all throughout February) everyone is encouraged to help the birds! Make sure your bird-feeders are well loaded (check and fill them often!) with all the good things that birds need to survive and thrive. Even just hanging a feeder full of sunflower seeds is a great way to make sure that you have birds in your yard all year round, (and you'll probably attract a few squirrels too). Seeds are the best food for birds this time of year because it's a high energy source. Breads aren't as good, but it's still better than nothing. Also, once you start feeding the birds, it's important to keep doing so! The birds will now be relying on your food sources for survival.
