Rochester MN Fall Home Maintenance

The fall season is right on our doorsteps. It’s time to get your home prepared for those harsh Minnesota winters that we all love so much!
Although autumn can be one of the busiest seasons for most Rochester MN homeowners, it’s also the best time to take advantage of the moderate temps and repair any damages before the first frost sets in. Here are some tips that will help winter-proof your home.
Exterior Maintenance- Check foundation for cracks and caulk around areas that your siding meets the foundation, where pipes & wires enter your house, and around the windows and door frames to prevent heat from escaping. This is the most inexpensive maintenance job you can do. Install storm doors and remove the screens from windows. Before you store the screens, repair damaged ones, spray with a protective coating and place in a dry area. Inspect the exterior walls to check for peeling or blistering paint. Make sure the roof is in good shape. Inspect for missing or loose shingles. The harsh winter elements can take a toll on your roof. The roof of your house is the first line of defense against the weather. So be proactive and deal with repairs in the fall before you are bombarded with snow. After the leaves have fallen, clean out your gutters and downspouts, flush with water, inspect joints, and tighten brackets if need be. If you have a pool, check over the cover and replace if damaged. Weather strip your garage door making sure the seal between the door and ground is tight to keep drafts and small animals out. Inspect your driveway for cracks. Clean out and repair and damage with filler and coat with a sealer.
Interior Maintenance Apply weather stripping and caulk to all areas needed to cut down on drafts and save money on your heating and energy costs. Have your heating system inspected by a professional and have it properly serviced if problems are found. Get your wood burning stove and fireplace in working order. Examine doors for a tight seal, clean and inspect the glass door for cracks, and have chimney professionally cleaned to prevent fire. Change the direction of your ceiling fan to create an upward draft and circulate warm air from the ceiling. Change Smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries. Check basement windows for drafts, loose frames or cracked panes. Vacuum internal parts of air conditioners. Remove window units or wrap in approved covers to prevent rusting. Clean your humidifiers regularly to prevent bacteria from growing in the dirty water tank.
Yard & Garden Organize your garage. Clean & store garden tools. Give your lawn some TLC by raking leaves and reseeding patchy areas. Deer proof your yard by covering bushes and shrubs with chicken wire. Drain fuel from your lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chain saws. Make sure your snow equipment is good to go before the first snowfall. Keep your outdoor gear within easy access so you are ready to brave the elements! When the snow arrives have your shovels and blower where you can find them and store them in an insulated area. Drain the garden hoses and bring them indoors. Shut off outdoor valves. Fertilize your lawn to ensure healthy growth in the spring.
Porch & Deck Check the foundation and make sure the handrails can support someone slipping on snow or ice. Clean porch & deck furniture, and look for any needed repairs. Cover and store outdoor furniture and barbeques in a protected area.  Empty the soil from pots and planters so they don’t freeze and crack.
